(1) It shall be the duty of the Director General, as far as may be to visit and inspect every prison at least once in two years and to satisfy himself that the provisions of the Act, and all the rules, regulations, directions and orders made or issued thereunder, applicable to such prison, are duly given effect to and enforced and that the management of each prison is in all respects efficient and satisfactory. A note recording the result of each visit and inspection shall be made in the Visitor’s Book to be maintained by the Superintendent for the purpose or otherwise communicated in the form of a note. (2) (a) The Director General may appoint any officer above the rank of the Superintendent to inspect prisons in the State. This appointment and earmarking of the prisons shall be done by the Director General in advance by 15th of January every year. (b) The appointment shall be done in such a manner that every such Inspecting Officer visits at least two prisons per year for a formal inspection. (c) Inspecting Officer shall submit the inspection report to the Director General. (d) The compliance report on the directions issued on the inspection note shall be submitted by the Superintendent concerned within three months of such inspection. (3) The Director General may also appoint any Superintendent to carry out inspection of any prison in the State. (4) Officers of the rank of Additional Inspector General or above may conduct informal inspection of a prison with the orders of the Director General. (5) The Director General may also appoint officers of the rank of the Superintendent or above to carry out inspections of the offices of District Probation Officer(s) across the State in a periodic manner.
