Section 536

(1) There shall be a prison school in every prison

(1) There shall be a prison school in every prison. Teachers shall be recruited departmentally or may be drawn from Education Department on transfer or on deputation. Literate prisoners, whose conduct has been good, shall be trained in imparting education to others. These trained inmates shall assist the regular teachers in organizing the educational programs devised for the prisons. Prisoner teachers shall be paid incentives at par with the prisoners deployed as “skilled” workers. The services of reputed non-Governmental Organizations may also be taken in the said endeavours. The teachers may also be appointed on contract basis, by the Director General. (2) Necessary equipment like books, stationery, writing material, etc., shall be provided at government cost. Use of audio-visual equipment for educational purposes shall be encouraged. The prison school shall conform to the prescribed standards and basic infrastructure like independent buildings, furniture, toilets, water facility including proper ventilation. (3) Syllabi shall be drawn up according to the needs of each inmate group. As far as possible, the education of prisoners shall be integrated with the educational system of the State so as to enable the released prisoners to continue their education without any difficulty. (4) Officers of Education Department shall also be entailed to render all possible help to enhance the effectiveness of prison education and to make it more meaningful. Prison library.
