(1) Remission is a concession which may be granted to a prisoner by the President or the Governor or appropriate Government or by the Director General or by the Superintendent. Remission is merely subject to withdrawal/forfeiture/revocation and is not a right and cannot be claimed as such. The appropriate Government reserves the right to debar/withdraw any prisoner, or category of prisoners, from the concession of remission. The remission already granted is also liable to be forfeited as per provisions of these rules. (2) Remission is intended to be an incentive for good conduct and work during a prisoner’s stay in the prison, willingness to work while in custody, cooperation, assistance and help to the prison administration in prison management, and general response to various institutional activities.
