Functions of the State Police Board

Functions of the State Police Board.- (1) The State Police Board shall- (i) approve broad policy guidelines , including five-years strategic Policing Plans and annual policing Sub- Plans, for promoting efficient, effective, responsive and accountable policing, in accordance with the law; (ii) approve from time to time the sanctioned strength of the various ranks of the Non-Gazetted Police Officers and Gazetted State Police Service Officers; (iii) identify performance indicators to evaluate the functioning of the police service and these indicators shall, inter alia, include operational efficiency, public satisfaction and proper utilization of resources; and (iv) review and evaluate organizational performance of the State Police against the five-year strategic Policing Plan and annual policing Sub-Plans and performance indicators as identified and laid down by the State Police Board. (2) The Board shall make recommendations to the State Government in respect of matters specified under sub-section (1) , which shall normally be binding on the State Government and the action taken on the recommendations shall be communicated to the Board within a period of three months: Provided that if the Government is of the opinion that it is not feasible in the public interest to give effect to any recommendation of the Board, it shall communicate the reasons thereof which shall be placed before the Board in its next meeting.
