(1) The barracks shall be guarded inside by the convict officers and they shall also be responsible for any escapes from sleeping barracks, suicides, group fight or quarrels in such barracks. A roster showing the names of convict officers deputed to patrol each ward with the hours of duty shall be kept. In every ward, three convict officers shall be deployed in three shifts of eight hours each. Convict officers whilst on duty shall patrol their wards, prevent, as far as lies in their power, the commission of any breach of prison discipline, satisfy themselves by frequent counting that all the prisoners are present and intimate the fact to the guarding personnel on duty every half an hour. At each change of watch, the convict officer shall report to the guarding personnel concerned regarding the number of prisoners present. In case of any unusual occurrence, he shall give immediate notice to the guarding personnel on duty to take any action that may be necessary. (2) The convict officers may be employed in guarding the main wall by night when the number of guarding personnel is insufficient. There shall be at least two guarding personnel to every convict officer on duty at any time. Their shift timings shall be same as of guarding personnel: Provided that no convict officer shall be placed on any beat patrol where he cannot be under the observation of guarding personnel. (3) The convict officers with the shortest unexpired sentence shall ordinarily be selected for duty outside the barrack at night. (4) The convict officers may be deployed to guard the barracks during the day or night hours subject to the supervision of guarding personnel.
