Article 39A of the Constitution of India casts a duty on the State to provide free legal aid to the poor and weaker sections of the society and ensure equal opportunities to secure justice for all. Articles 14 and 22(1) of the Constitution further make it obligatory for the state to ensure equality before law and put in place a legal system which promotes justice on the basis of equal opportunity to all. In furtherance of these constitutional provisions, the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), the State Legal Services Authorities (SLSAs), District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) and Sub-Divisional Legal Services Committees (SDLSCs) have been constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 (Central Act 39 of 1987) in order to establish a nationwide network for providing free and competent legal services to the weaker sections of the society on the basis of equal opportunity.
