The following shall be the provisions for dealing with the prisoners item, namely, - (a) such items which in the opinion of the Superintendent are of a perishable nature or are likely to deteriorate by keeping, or shall involve expenditure in such keeping, or is in such damaged or filthy state as shows it to be not worth keeping, shall be handed over to the nominee or family member of such prisoner. Such articles, which the nominee or family member of the prisoner refuses shall be destroyed. A note to that effect shall be made in the list of items of such prisoner. The same shall be attested by Deputy Superintendent (Administration). (b) If any prisoner at the time of admission to the prison or at any subsequent time is suffering from any contagious or infectious disease and for that reason, the Medical Officer believes that any item of clothing or bedding or the like belonging to such prisoner should be destroyed, it shall be destroyed accordingly and a note to that effect shall be made in the list of the property of such prisoner. The same shall be attested by Deputy Superintendent (Administration). (c) The jewelry (weighed and photographed), trinkets, securities, money and other valuables (if any) belonging to a prisoner, shall be placed in a separate packet and the prisoner’s register number, name and the date of sentence shall be endorsed thereon. (EXTRA.), DEC. 30, 2022 (PAUS. 9, 1944 SAKA) (d) Every prisoner may be allowed to retain one pair of shoes (without sponge sole and laces) and one pair of slippers or chappals for use in prison. All prisoners may be allowed to retain a comb, two blankets, one mat, a durry 6’x3’, a soap dish, soap, a pair of towel, a pair of nightdress two pairs of socks, four pairs of inner wear, three pairs of private clothing, two sweaters/jacket, a pair of bed sheets, a toothbrush, paste, one plate, one glass, one plastic mug, and one plastic bucket, etc. (e) Hindus who wear sacred thread may retain it when confined in a prison. Sikhs may be allowed to retain a thin Kara (iron bangle) and one inch long holy symbols; if he swears a long sword then it should be replaced by 1-inch long holy symbol. The sword should be kept with due sanctity in the place earmarked by the prison authorities as per religious decorum. Sikhs may be allowed to wear a turban and keep a beard. (f) Female prisoners may be allowed to retain certain ornaments of minor value such as bangles (plastic), toe-rings, nose-rings, and mangal sutra, which should be entered on the History-Tickets and initialed by the Deputy Superintendent (Administration). Superintendent may, however, at their discretion refuse to allow the retention of ornaments in any particular case for administrative reasons. The female prisoners shall be responsible for the safe custody of such articles. Belongings to be stitched in bundles and labeled.
