(1) Sports, cultural and other recreational activities shall be organized in all prisons as integral part of the prison regime for maintaining mental and physical health of the prisoners. Yoga and meditation will be practiced daily for which special hours shall be earmarked. Separate space for meditation may also be provided. It shall be ensured that all discourses in the prison are secular in nature. (2) Sports activities may comprise indoor and outdoor games depending upon availability of space, climate and weather, the composition of prisoners and security requirements. Efforts shall be made to build a gymnasium in every prison. Other recreational and cultural activities may include, - (a) Film shows: Every Central and District Prison shall have facilities for showing films to the prisoners and staff members. Historical, patriotic, biographical, scientific and educational films, travelogues, documentaries, newsreel and films dealing with social themes will be shown. Films depicting crime, sex, violence and such other subjects that may have an adverse effect on the minds of prisoners shall not be shown; 1334 HARYANA GOVT. GAZ. (EXTRA.), DEC. 30, 2022 (PAUS. 9, 1944 SAKA) (b) Music: Music has special significance in the context of a prison. It can bring relief to lonely, distressed and unhappy minds. It can relieve boredom and promote interest in institutional programmes. Music programmes may consist of radio music, recorded music, group singing, folk music, instrumental music and orchestra etc. A Prison radio may be established in every Central and District Prison; (c) Community and Folk Dances: Group and Folk dances shall be performed on festivals and social occasions; (d) Drama: Useful social values and models of behaviour shall be promoted before the prisoners through dramatic performances. Dramas dealing with social problems, pageants, musical dramas, tableau and radio plays could be performed for the benefit of prisoners. Prisoners themselves should be encouraged to take part and organise these activities; (e) Arts and craft: Art and craft provide avenues for giving expression to the innate abilities of an individual and can play an important role in the reformation of prisoners by giving them an identity and the ability to earn livelihood. These activities can serve as supportive therapeutic measures in the otherwise monotonous life of a prison; (f) Reading: Prisoners shall be encouraged to read books, newspapers and magazines. Group reading and guided reading can also be useful for them; and (g) Television: The channels to be shown and their timings, shall be prescribed by the Director General from time to time. (3) Well known personalities in the fields of art, sports, literature, culture and music may be invited to the prison as guests on various occasions to inspire the prisoners and be role-models for them.
