The following procedure shall be adopted on admission to the prison, - (a) a thorough search of the prisoner’s body and his belongings including clothing; (b) removal of prisoner’s personal items and the issue of authorized personal belongings; (c) general monitoring of prisoner’s background and needs to decide the appropriate placement within the reception center and subsequently in the prison as per the principles of basic segregation laid down in Chapter 5 of these rules; (d) taking photographs, biometrics, and recording of prescribed entries in registers; (e) a thorough medical examination by the Medical Officer on the day of admission. This shall include identification of prisoners suffering from substance-related and addictive disorders; (f) when a prisoner with injuries on his body is admitted into a prison from police custody, he shall be examined immediately by the Medical Officer. If the examination reveals unexplained injuries not already recorded in the medico-legal report accompanying the prisoner, a report shall at once be made to the Court concerned; (g) orientation of prisoners to the prison rules and disciplinary norms; (h) fixing of diet and issuance of hygiene kit, bedding, and clothing as per the rules; (i) bathing, haircut and shaving of the prisoner and washing of his clothing. NOTE - If identification parade of the prisoner is to be done, no haircut or shaving shall be allowed. The same shall be done only after the identification parade. No admission at night.
