(1) Every prison shall have a reception center, where all newly admitted prisoners shall be received and kept for a maximum period of seventy-two hours to enable their individual study, health screening, orientation, etc. (2) The reception center shall have an office and it shall function under the control of the Deputy Superintendent (Administration). (3) The reception center shall have separate barracks for male and female prisoners and convicted and undertrial prisoners. Within each category, the inmates shall be segregated from the very beginning in accordance with the categorization scheme as laid down in sub-rule (3) of rule 45. In case sufficient accommodation is not available in the reception center to meet the requirement of segregation, adequate space in the general barracks, wards, or enclosures may be earmarked for the purpose from time to time. Space so earmarked in any barrack, ward or enclosure shall be used to house the newly admitted inmates of the corresponding category only and at no point in time, the rules of segregation shall be violated. (4) The inmate shall be moved to the barrack, ward, cell as per his entitlement and classification as soon as possible but not later than seventy-two hours from admission after completion of the specified tasks. Transgender shall be kept separately in appropriate male or female ward as per the recommendation of the Medical Officer of the prison. (5) If there is a prevalence of an epidemic or notification to that effect under the Epidemic Disease Act, 1897 ( Central Act 3 of 1897) is in force, no resident of the reception center shall be shifted to any general barrack until the expiry of such period, as may be specified in such notification.
