(1) The role, responsibilities, duties and powers of the Director General shall be as follows, namely: – (a) to implement the provisions of the Act and these rules as amended from time to time; (b) to implement policies relating to the administration of prisons and correctional services as laid down by the Government; (c) to plan, organize, direct, coordinate and control the functioning of various prisons and correctional services; (d) to define the functions and fix clear lines of authority and chain of command for the respective prison personnel; (e) to issue instructions for proper administration, management and smooth functioning of prisons and other institutions with special reference to care, welfare, training and treatment of inmates, training of staff, maintenance of discipline and welfare etc.; and (f) to inspect prisons and other institutions under the control of the Department. (2) The Director General, subject to the general control and superintendence of the Government, shall exercise all necessary financial, administrative and disciplinary powers to enable him to discharge his lawful duties and responsibilities. (3) The Director General shall be provided with the facility of camp office at his official residence.
