(l) The ordinary duties ofpolice in respect of crime shall be discharged by the village authorities. They shatl maintain peace and order within theirjurisdiction. Public duties of village authorilies. (2) The village authorities shall not be deemed to be police officer for purposes ofsection 25 and section 26 ofthe Indian Evidence Act, 1872 or the sectior 162 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 (since repealedbyAct Il of 1974). (3) The village authorities shall watch and report on any vargrant, or any bad or suspicious character found within their jurisdiction, and may apprehend any such person if they have reasonable grounds for suspecting that he has committed or is about to commit an offence. and shall hand over any person so apprehend to the lDeputy Commissioner]r or an lAssistant Commissionerf l.
