Coram:
Hon’ble Mrs. Justice Revati Mohite Dere, Chief Justice
Hon’ble Mr. Justice W. Diengdoh, Judge
Appearance: For the Applicant : Mr. A. Kumar, Advocate General with
Ms. R. Colney, GA
For the Respondents : Mr. P.T. Sangma, Adv
ORDER: (per the Hon’ble, the Chief Justice) (Oral)
By the aforesaid miscellaneous application, the applicant-State of Meghalaya seeks extension of time upto 31st March, 2026, for complying with the directions passed by this Court vide order dated 18th August, 2025, in the aforesaid PIL i.e., PIL No.7 of 2025 i.e., to appoint a Chairperson and Members of the Police Accountability Commission, as provided in the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010.
2. The order giving directions to constitute an Accountability Commission was given vide order dated 18th August, 2025. From the aforesaid application, it appears that the State Government has Serial No.02 Daily List 2026:MLHC:33-DB
constituted a selection committee tasked to recommend a panel of names for the appointment of Chairperson and members of the proposed Police Accountability Commission. From the application, it further appears that the search for suitable candidates to join the Commission is taking some time, and as such, two months’ time is sought.
3. Considering the aforesaid, we deem it appropriate to grant extension of time of only six weeks from today, having regard to the fact that no Commission has been constituted till date, despite the same having been provided in the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010 and despite the order dated 18th August, 2025. We make it clear that no further extension will be granted and that the decision to recommend the names for the Police Accountability Commission, be done before the said date.
4. Miscellaneous application is allowed and disposed of in the aforesaid terms.
