The writ petition has been filed seeking a mandamus directing the first respondent, namely, the State of Tamil Nadu represented by its Principal Secretary, Public Law Officers Department to strike off improper appointment of Law Officers, which had been annexed in the list. The writ petition had been filed in the year 2025 complaining that the appointment dated 16.05.2024 of several Law Officers had been done without following rules. However, as on date, all those who had been appointed by the said letter dated 16.05.2024 had resigned from their post and therefore, this relief has become redundant, infructuous and incapable of being addressed by this Court. 2/7 https://www.mhc.tn.gov.in/judis 2.In the writ petition, a further relief is sought that representations of the petitioner dated 12.08.2024, 11.11.2024, 24.02.2025 and 02.06.2025 should be considered by the first respondent. The very fact that the petitioner had given four successive representations would indicate that the first respondent was actively considering the said representations. We have confidence that all the valuable points raised by the petitioner would be appropriately addressed by the first respondent. 3.W.M.P.(MD)No.12277 of 2026 has been filed to implead the Chairman, Law Officers Selection Committee represented by the Advocate General, State of Tamil Nadu as a further respondent in the writ petition and to further direct the said respondent to place before this Court all records relating to constitution of Selection Committee, procedure adopted for selection, criteria applied for valuation, recommendation made by the Committee and temporary appointments effected for Law Officers of the High Court, Madras and Madurai Bench. 4.With respect to the relief to implead the Chairman, Law Officers, Selection Committee, we would only state that selection process has to be done in accordance with the Rules and it cannot be thrown open for all the public to 3/7 https://www.mhc.tn.gov.in/judis know who are the candidates, who had applied and who are in the process of being selected. That is the exclusive privilege of the Law Officers' Selection Committee and it may not be proper before the selection process is completed, to direct the Chairman to reveal all the details. We would refrain from stating any further on this aspect, but we hold that the said impleading application cannot be entertained and the same is dismissed. 5.The petitioner also filed W.M.P.(MD)No.11604 of 2026 seeking a direction to implement a strict Standard Operating Procedure for appointment of Law Officers. Rules have been framed with respect to the stipulations required for appointment of Law Officers. Unless the petitioner comes up with specific instances that there has been violation of Rules; that the Rules those are not proper or that the Rules require amendment, it would not be prudent in our part to interfere with the selection process and direct implementation of the said Rules, which will always anyway be implemented. Since there is no reason to hold that the said Rules would not be implemented, it would not be proper to direct that a separate set of rules be implemented. We are confident that necessary procedure as enunciated would be followed by the selection committee. The writ miscellaneous petition is closed. 4/7 https://www.mhc.tn.gov.in/judis 6.The learned Counsel for the State also pointed out that notification No.1/2026 has been issued on 12.06.2026 by the Government of Tamil Nadu Public (Law Officers) Department inviting applications for the post of Law Officers spreading from Additional Advocate General to Government Advocate, totally 99 posts in the Principal Bench and 41 posts in the Madurai Bench. 7.We wish all the applicants the very best and we are confident that the best candidates would be selected. To ensure that, the Selection Committee must be left at peace. 8.Accordingly, this writ petition stands dismissed. There shall be no order to costs.
