The first respondent/District Collector has filed the status report, wherein it is stated that initially 12 number of commercial encroachments were evicted on 2.6.2026 from the river bank of Araniyar River in Ponneri-I Village. With regard to removal of remaining 784 Nos. of residential encroachments, a joint meeting headed by the District Collector, Tiruvallur, was conducted on 10.6.2026. Since mass displacement of about 784 family landless ______________ https://www.mhc.tn.gov.in/judis Cont.P.No.3633 of 2025 poor is involved, it was decided to rehabilitate them in the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board’s multi-storeyed building at the nearest available housing complex. Eight teams comprising officials from the Departments of Water Resource, Revenue, Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board, Labour and Police have conducted enumeration on 15.6.2026 for the purpose of rehabilitation and allotment of houses in Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board’s multi-storeyed building. 3. Considering the action taken by the respondents, we are inclined to grant six months time to rehabilitate the displaced families and ensure that all the encroachments from the waterbody in question are removed. 4. Recording the status report filed by the first respondent, the contempt petition is closed.
