Virk, Deputy Advocate General with Mr. Rakesh Joshi, Brief Holder for the State of Uttarakhand. 3. Petitioners have filed this writ petition for protection. According to them, they were known to each other since childhood, which gradually developed into liking, and ultimately, they decided to live together as husband and wife. According to them, Nikah was solemnised on 04.09.2024 at Sitarganj, however, parents and family members of petitioner no. 1 are not happy with their marriage, and they are extending threat to the petitioners. 4. As per the documents enclosed with the writ petition, both the petitioners are major. 5. Learned State Counsel submits that since petitioners have already married, therefore, the police authorities will provide necessary protection to them for a reasonable time. 6. Since both the petitioners are major and they are living together with their own free will, therefore, in view of the law laid down by Hon’ble Apex Court in the case of Lata Singh Vs. State of 2025:UHC:3340-DB U.P. and Another; 2006 (5) SCC 475, we are inclined to grant protection to the petitioners. 7. Accordingly, the writ petition is disposed of directing the Station House Officer, Police Station Sitarganj, District Udham Singh Nagar to provide protection to petitioners for a period of 8 weeks to ensure that no harm is caused to them by private respondents or any other person acting at their behest. Upon expiry of 8 weeks, the SHO concerned shall make fresh assessment of threat perception of petitioners and take such steps, as are felt necessary. 8.
