Respondent For Petitioner : Mr.S.Sugendran Additional Public Prosecutor ORDER The allegation in this case is that on 14.08.2016, the accused persons, without obtaining any persmission, staged a protest in front of Karaivetti Government Middle School under the leaderhsip of Shanmugasundaram, State Secretary of Makkal Seva Iyakkam, demanding that Karaivetti Lake be desilted and water from Marudhaiyar river be diverted to the lake. It is clear that the incident was in the nature of a democratic protest and no serious offence is made out. In any event, the accused have been facing trial since 2016. Any further continuance of trial would only impinge upon the right to speedy trial . 3.
