A case was registered in Cr.No.285 of 2019 on 09.08.2019 for the alleged offences under Sections 143, 290 IPC; Sections 41, 71A(1) of TN City Police Act and Section 4A(1a) of TN Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act, 1959. The final report was filed on 05.02.2020, and the accused have been facing trial since then. Thus, it can be seen that the allegations concern exercising the democratic right to protest. Given the context and nature of the allegations, continuing the trial impinges on the right to a speedy trial of the accused. No useful purpose will be served by continuing the case. 2.
