(1) The Corporation shall— (a) take measures for lighting, in a suitable manner, the public streets, squares and gardens, municipal markets and all buildings vested in the Corporation; (b) procure, erect and maintain such number of lamps, lamp- posts, other appurtenances as may be necessary for such lighting; and (c) cause such lamps to be lighted by means of oil, gas, electricity or such other means as the Corporation may from time to time determine. (2) The Corporation may itself or in conjunction with any firm or company and in accordance with such regulations as may be made by the Corporation, erect plants and machineries for the generation of power and production of gas for the purpose of lighting. (3) The Corporation may place and maintain— (i) electric wires or gas-pipes for the purpose of lighting such lamps under, over, along or across any immovable property, and (ii) posts, poles, standards, stays, struts, brackets, tunnels, culverts or any other contrivance for carrying, suspending or supporting such lamps, gas-pipes or electric wires in or upon any immovable property: Provided that such pipes, wires, posts, poles, standards, stays, struts, brackets, tunnels, culverts or other contrivance shall be so placed as to occasion as little damage, detriment, inconvenience or nuisance to any person as the circumstances permit. 342 The Howrah Municipal Corporation Act, 1980.
