If a person, having the custody, charge or care of a child under the provisions of this Act, assaults, ill-treats, abandons or exposes such child, or causes such child to be assaulted, ill-treated, neglected, abandoned or exposed in a manner likely to cause such child physical or mental suffer- ing or injury, he shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or with fine not exceeding two hundred rupees or with both.
