If two or more estates, which may have originally formed portions of the same estate, shall come into the possession of one person, such person shall be entitled to have such estates united, and to hold them as a single estate; or if two or more persons shall have separate possession of their respective shares of an estate which was originally held as a joint undivided estate, such persons may apply to have their shares united, and to hold them as one estate.
