State Intelligence and Criminal Investigation Departments (1) The state police organization shall have a State Intelligence Department for collection, collation, analysis and dissemination of intelligence, and a Criminal Investigation Department for investigating inter-state, inter-district crimes and other specified offences, in accordance with the provisions of Chapter IX of this Act. (2) The State Government shall appoint a police officer of or above the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police to head each of the aforesaid departments. (3) The Criminal Investigation Department shall have specialized wings to deal with different types of crime requiring focused attention or special expertise for investigation. Each of these wings shall be headed by an officer not below the rank of a Superintendent of Police. (4) The State Intelligence Department shall have specialized wings, to deal with and coordinate specialized tasks such as measures for counter terrorism, counter militancy and VIP Security. (5) The State Government shall appoint by rules prescribed under this Act, an appropriate number of officers from different ranks to serve in the Criminal Investigation Department, and the State Intelligence Department, as deemed appropriate with due regard to the volume and variety of tasks to be handled.
