Short title, commencement and application

1) This Act may be called the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963. (2) It shall come into force on such date1 as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint. (3) It applies in the first instance to the major ports of Cochin, Kandla and Visakhapatnam and the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, apply2 the provisions of this Act to such other major port [x x x x], and with effect from such date, as may be specified in the notification. Came into force on 02/09/1964, vide G.S.R. 296, dated 28th February, 1964. The Act has been extended to apply to- Major Port of Mormugao, w.e.f. 1st July, 1964 by Notification No. G.S.R. 922, dated 22nd June, 1964, GOI, Pt. II, Sec. 3 (i), p. 951. Major Port of Paradip, w.e.f. 1st November, 1967 by Notification No. G.S.R. 1516, dated 27th September, 1967, GOI; Pt. II, Sec. 3 (i), p. 1646 The words "(not being the major port of Bombay, Calcutta or Madras)" omitted by Act 29 of 1974, sec. 2. (w.e.f. 15/01/1975).
