These regulations include the recommendations of the 6th Decennial International Revision Conference with regard to certification of cause of death, which are designed to secure universal uniformity as to stating the “UNDERLYING CAUSE OF DEATH.”. The relevant extracts from these recommendations are given below :— (1) A cause of death is the morbid condition or disease process, abnormality * leading directly or indirectly to death. Symptoms or modes of dying. such as heart failure, asthenia etc., are not considered to be causes of death for statistical purposes. (2) The underlying cause of death may be defined as— (a) the disease* *which initiated the train of morbid events leading directly to death, or (b) * * * * (3) The (recommended) medical certificate of death is designed to elicit the information which will facilitate the selection of the UNDERLYING CAUSE OF DEATH when two or more causes are jointly recorded.
