No police officer shall resign his office or withdraw himself from the duties thereof, unless expressly allowed to do so in writing by the Inspector-General or by such other officer as may be authorised by the Government to grant such permission or unless, except in the case of a special police officer, he shall have given to his superior officer, notice in writing for a period not less than two months of his intention to do so: Provided that, if any police officer produces a certificate signed by a Medical Officer empowered by the Government in this behalf declaring such police officer to be unfit by reason of any disease or mental or physical incapacity for further service in the police, the necessary written permission to resign shall forthwith be granted to him. Explanation.-- A police officer who, being absent on leave, fails without reasonable cause to report himself for duty on the expiration of such leave shall be deemed, within the meaning of this section, to withdraw himself from the duties of his office.
