Power to grant extension of tlme for returns, etc.-The as~essmg authonty may, m his d1~cretion, in the case of any person or class of persons, extend the date before wh1ch the return under sub-section (1) or sub-sectiOn (2) of ~ectlon :4 has to be furrushed or, on application by an assessee, allow him s1:1ch extension or extensions of time as the authority thinks fit to furnish the return or comply w1th the terms.of a notice under tlus Act.
