(1) Municipality shall cause the public streets in its land area to be lighted and for that purpose shall provide such lamps and works as it deem necessary. (2) For the purpose of sub-section (1), the Kerala State Electricity Board shall provide the required electrical energy and technical assistance to the Municipality, at the rates fixed by Government and on other conditions, as prescribed. (3) Notwithstanding anything contained in sub-section (1), the Government shall, in consultation with the Municipality, provide any public street with a lighting system through an approved agency. (4) Notwithstanding anything contained in this section, two or more Local Self Government institutions, may with the sanction of and on such terms as may be approved by the Government, provide and maintain any street lighting system jointly.] Section 316 substituted by Act 14 of 1999, w.e.f. 24-3-1999. Prior to the substitution it read as under: "316. Provision for lighting public streets.- (1) A Municipality shall, so far as the funds at its disposal permit, cause the public streets to be lighted and for that purpose shall provide such lamps and works as it thinks necessary. (2) Notwithstanding anything contained in sub-section (1), it shall be lawful for the Government to provide any public street with a lighting system through an agency approved by them or through the Municipality. (3) Where any lighting system is worked through an agency, an annual contribation of such amount as may be agreed upon between the agency and the Municipality shall be paid to the agency by the Municipality and where it is worked through the Muncipality, it shall be so done on such terms as may be agreed upon by the Government and the Municipality. (4) Notwithstanding anything contained in sub-section (1) to (3), it shall be lawful for two or more Municipalities, with the sanction of, and on such terms as may be approved by, the Government to provide for any lighting system and maintained it jointly."
