Short title, extent and commencement.—(1) This Act may be called the Kerala Maternity Benefit Act, 1957. (2) It extends to the whole of the State of Kerala. (3) It shall come into force on such date as the Government may, by notification in the Gazette, appoint. (4) It shall apply, in the first instance to all factories and plantations. (5) The Government may after giving one month's notice of their intention of so doing by notification in the Gazette extend the provisions of this Act to any other establishment or class of establishments, industrial, commercial or otherwise wherein fifty or more persons are employed or were employed on any day of the preceding twelve months.
