(1) The administration of the police throughout the general police district shall be vested in 1 [an officer to be styled the Inspector General of Police and in such Deputy Inspectors General and Assistant Inspectors General as the Government may specify in this behalf]. The administration of the police throughout the local jurisdiction of the District Magistrate shall, under the general control and direction of such Magistrate, be vested in a Superintendent and such Assistant and Deputy superintendents, as 2 [the Government] shall consider necessary. The Inspector General and the Superintendents of police shall from time to time be appointed by the Government and may be removed by the same authority. The Assistant Superintendents and Deputy Superintendents shall from time to time be appointed by 2 [the Government] and may be removed by the same authority. 3 [(2) The Government may from time to time appoint one or more officers to be designated as Deputy Inspectors General of Police 4 [or Assistant Inspectors General of Police for the discharge of such functions under this Act as may be assigned to them by the Inspector General of Police].
