It shall be the duty of a watch tower sentry, - (a) to be alert at all times during his duty; (b) to be present at his post/on duty in such a way that he is visible to a prison officer all the time; (c) not to leave his post without regular relief on any pretext whatsoever; (d) not to allow any person to approach near the outer boundary wall of the prison premises; (e) to ensure that no article is thrown inside or outside the prison premises; (f) to challenge any unauthorized person; to warn the person challenged, and if the reply is unsatisfactory, to alert other guarding personnel and to stand until the Duty Officer arrives, bringing his rifle at the same time to “the charge position”; (g) if he sees a prisoner attempting to escape, to call on him to stand and if he refuses to do so and there is no superior officer present, to fire at the prisoner, provided he cannot otherwise prevent the escape; (h) if he is beyond call and has to alarm the guard, to fire a shot in the air as the signal of alarm; (i) if he sees any article in or near the prison likely to facilitate escape, or if any unusual incident comes under his observation, to at once report the matter to the Duty Officer, and (j) to enforce his orders firmly and without distinction of persons.
