Notwithstanding anything contained anywhere in these rules, the total remission awarded to a prisoner under these rules including the Government remission, except remission granted under article 72 or 161 of the Constitution of India, shall not, without the sanction of the Director General, exceed one-fourth part of his sentence: Provided that the Director General may grant remission up to the maximum of one-third of the sentence.
