Section 47

The role and functions of the police shall broadly be,- (a) to prevent and detect crime; (b) to protect life and property and maintain law and order; (c) to preserve public order; (d) to provide possible help to people in distress or in situations arising out of natural or man-made disasters; (e) to facilitate orderly movement of people and vehicles; (f) to collect intelligence relating to matters affecting public peace, crime, social harmony and security of state and take appropriate action; (g) to take charge of all unclaimed property and take action as per rules; (h) to prevent and control public nuisance; (i) to enforce any other duty assigned by law.
