Duration of the term of the Corporation.— (1) The Corporation shall, unless sooner dissolved, continue for a period of five years from the date appointed for its first meeting and no longer. 7[(1A) At the first meeting of the Corporation, every Councilor shall take oath of office in such form, and before such officer, as the Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, specify. No Councilor who has not taken such oath shall vote or take part in the proceedings of any meeting of the Corporation.] (2) A Corporation formed immediately after the commencement of this Act shall continue for a period of one year 8“from the date of its constitution” or until the new elections are held under the provisions of this Act, whichever is earlier: Provided however, the State Government may extend the term of the Corporation referred to in sub-section (2) above not beyond a period of 9[two years], after the expiry of one year, for exceptional reasons.
