Section 1

Short title, extent, application and commencement

(1) This Act may be called the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, 1973. (2) It extends to the whole of India. (3) It applies also to all citizens of India outside India and to branches and agencies outside India of companies or bodies corporate, registered or incorporated in India. (4) It shall come into force on such date1 as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint in this behalf: Provided that different dates may be appointed for different provisions of this Act and any reference in any such provision to the commencement of this Act shall be construed as a reference to the coming into force of that provision. Came into force on 27/10/1973, vide S.O. 3043, dated 27th October 1973, published in the Gazette of India, Pt. Sec. 3 (ii), p. 3540, dated 27th October 1973.
