Definitions. - In these rules unless the context otherwise requires :- (a) “ Act” means the Census Act, 1948 (37 of 1948); (b) “Census Commissioner” means the Census Commissioner appointed under sub-section (1) of section 4 of the Act; (c) “Census Schedule” means the schedule containing questions referred to in sub-section (1) of section 8 of the Act; (d) “Charge Officer” “Additional Charge Officer” and “Sub Charge Officer” mean the census officers appointed as such under sub-section (2) of section 4 of the Act and includes Tehsildar, Mamlatdar, Block Development Officer, Chief Administrative Officer of a town, executive officer and other officers; (e) “Director of Census Operations” means the Director of Census Operations appointed under sub- section (1) of section 4 of the Act to supervise the taking of census within a State or Union Territory; (f) “District Census Officer”, “Sub- divisional Census Officer” and “Additional District Census Officer” mean the census officers appointed under sub-section (4) of section 4 of the Act; (g) “Enumerator” means an officer appointed under sub-section (4) of section 4 of the Act; (h) “Joint Director of Census Operations”, “Deputy Director of Census Operations” and “Assistant Director of Census Operations” mean officers assisting the Director of Census Operations; 16 (i) “Principal Census Officer” means a census officer designated as such under sub-section (2) of section 4 of the Act; (j) “Supervisor” means an officer appointed under sub- section (4) of section 4 of the Act; [(k) All other words and expressions used herein and not defined but defined in the Act, shall have the meanings respectively assigned to them in Act.]1
