In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires,.— (a) “ Agriculture” and “ agricultural purpose” shall include making land fit for cultivation, cu tivation of land, improvement of land, land including deve lopment of sources of irrigation, raising and har vesting of crops, horticulture, forestry, planting and farming and cattle breeding, anim al husbandly , dairy farming, seed fa' rning, pisciculture, apicul ture, sericul'ure, pig, ery, poultry farming and such o'he r activities as are generally carried TH E ASSAM GAZETTE, EXTRA ORDINA RY , MAY i, A , on by agriculturists, dairy farmers, cattle breeders, poultry farm ers and other categories of persons engaged in similar activities including marketing of agricultural products, their s otage and transport and the acquisition of implem n s and machinery in connection with any such activi y ; (b) “Agriculturist” means a person who is enga ged in Agriculture ; (c) “Agro-Industrie s Co rporation” mear.s a company or oth er body corporate one of the principal objectives of which is to undertake activities connec ted with or intended for the development of agricul ture and not less than fifty-one percent of the paid-up share cap ital of which is held by the C en tra l Govern ment or by any State Goveinmen or pa rt y by the Central Government and partly by one or more State Governments ; (d) “Bank” means— (i) a banking company as defined in the Banking Regulation Ac t, 1919: (ii) the State Bank of In dia constituted under the State Bank of Ind ia Act, 1955 ; (iii) a subsidiary bank as defined in the State Bank of India (Subsidiary Banks) Act, 1959 ; (iv) a corresponding new bank constituted under the Banking Companies (Acquisition and Transfer of Undertakings) Act, 1970 ; (v) a Regional Rural Bank established under the Regional Ru ral Banks Act, 1976 ; (vi) any banking institution no'ified by the Central Government under Section 51 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 ; (vii) Agricultural Refinance and Development Corporation constituted under the Agricultural Refinance and Development Corporation Act, 1963 ; 30 i (viii) the Agro-Industries Corpo ration as de fined in sub-section (c); (ix) the Agricultural Finance Corporation Ltd., a company incorporated under the Com panies Act, 1956 ; and 302 THE ASSAM GAZETTE, EXTRAORDINARY, MAY 2, 1977 (x) other financial institution! notified by the State Government in the Official Gazette as a bank for th e purpose of this Act. (e) "Co-operative Society” means a Co operative Society registered or deemed to be registered under the Assam Co operative Societies Act, 1949 (Act I of 1950) the object of which ii to provide financial assistance as defined in clause (f) of this section to its members and in cludes a Co-operative La nd Mortgage/ Development Bank; and (f) "financial assistance” for the purpose of this Act means assistance granted by way of loans, advance, guarantee or otherwise for agricultural purposes.
